Statistics and the Bayesian mind

چکیده
When people mention statistics and human cognition in the same sentence, it is usually to complain about the limitations of the latter when applied to the former. For example, during World War II the city of London was struck by German V-1 and V-2 rockets. The locations at which the rockets landed seemed to cluster in poorer parts of the city, and it was a widespread belief that these areas were being specifically targeted. After the war, the locations of rocket landings in a portion of the city were subjected to statistical analysis, which showed that there was not sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis that the rockets had fallen uniformly at random. The apparent clustering that people had perceived was just a coincidence.

Bayesian perspective over time
Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...
متن کاملComparison of Estimates Using Record Statistics from Lomax Model: Bayesian and Non Bayesian Approaches
This paper address the problem of Bayesian estimation of the parameters, reliability and hazard function in the context of record statistics values from the two-parameter Lomax distribution. The ML and the Bayes estimates based on records are derived for the two unknown parameters and the survival time parameters, reliability and hazard functions. The Bayes estimates are obtained based on conju...
متن کاملNon-linear Bayesian prediction of generalized order statistics for liftime models
In this paper, we obtain Bayesian prediction intervals as well as Bayes predictive estimators under square error loss for generalized order statistics when the distribution of the underlying population belongs to a family which includes several important distributions.
متن کاملBayesian Prediction Intervals for Future Order Statistics from the Generalized Exponential Distribution
Let X1, X2, ..., Xr be the first r order statistics from a sample of size n from the generalized exponential distribution with shape parameter θ. In this paper, we consider a Bayesian approach to predicting future order statistics based on the observed ordered data. The predictive densities are obtained and used to determine prediction intervals for unobserved order statistics for one-sample ...
متن کاملBayesin estimation and prediction whit multiply type-II censored sample of sequential order statistics from one-and-two-parameter exponential distribution
In this article introduce the sequential order statistics. Therefore based on multiply Type-II censored sample of sequential order statistics, Bayesian estimators are derived for the parameters of one- and two- parameter exponential distributions under the assumption that the prior distribution is given by an inverse gamma distribution and the Bayes estimator with respect to squared error loss ...
متن کاملBayesian Inference for Spatial Beta Generalized Linear Mixed Models
In some applications, the response variable assumes values in the unit interval. The standard linear regression model is not appropriate for modelling this type of data because the normality assumption is not met. Alternatively, the beta regression model has been introduced to analyze such observations. A beta distribution represents a flexible density family on (0, 1) interval that covers symm...
